ROMANOS PATRAS
Romanos is a suburb settlement located on the borders of the residential fabric of Patras itself. It is built in an amphitheater location and offers a panoramic view of the city of Patras and the wider area as well as the Gulf of Patras. For this reason, the area is often referred to as Panorama[2].
It is an area rich in natural environment, with an excellent dry climate, while there is also a grove in the southwest, with the main characteristics of the dense stands of pine trees that cover it, as well as a sycamore forest in the Diakoniari stream that crosses the area, which are hiking areas, recreation sites and tranquility.
Location – Points of Interest
Romanos is built east of the city of Patras, on the western slopes of the Panachai mountain, extending at an altitude of 130-330 meters. It borders the eastern districts of Patras Lykochoros, Koutsa Eglykadas and Riganokambos, as well as Elekistra. To the west, and at a lower altitude than this, passes the Perimetriki Odos of Patras. It is 5 kilometers by road from the center of Patras.
A little above Romanos, at the western foothills of Panahaikos, originates the largest stream of Patras, the Diakoniaris, which crosses the area along its length and forms a canyon in its course, the so-called “Desis-Diakoniari Gorge”. At one point on the bridge of Romanos is its access for visitors. Diakoniaris stands out for its natural environment, its huge plane trees and other trees, the dense vegetation, the species of wild plants and the impressive natural landscape.
At the springs of Diakoniaris is the “Roman Aqueduct” of Romanos – the old Roman aqueduct of Patras – The Romans built a large water tank at its springs where the torrent of Diakoniaris begins. The reservoir was made in the form of an artificial dam at the beginning of the lake and at a distance of ten meters from the springs. Part of the original wall of the dam is today embedded in the base of the modern reservoir, while at a distance of 20 m, in the river bed there are several large pieces of strong wall. The aqueduct was 6 kilometers long, from its sources in Romanos to the acropolis, where the city’s castle is today.
The aqueduct was built in the 2nd century AD. probably by the Roman emperor Hadrian to deal with the lack of water in Patras, which until then was irrigated from wells, since the time of the Romans, a water pump had been made from where ancient Patras was supplied with water until recent years.
Temples
The main churches of the settlement are St. Peter and Paul Apostles and St. Dimitrios St. The area also has some picturesque chapels that are located in the wider natural landscape and have a view towards the city of Patras, a little higher on the borders of the area above Romanou hill towards Panahaikos, such as: the Holy Church of Panagia Vlachernon or Panahaikiotissa, Agia Paraskevi in Zastova, and lower: such as the Dormition of the Virgin and the Life-giving Spring which each have their own architecture and different history.
Sport
In 1978, the “Romanos” Sports Club of Patras (abbreviated: A.O. Romanos) was founded in the area. The team only has a football section and currently competes in the 3rd local division of the Greek League. Achaia.
